1.MILLENNIUM CELEBRATIONS - 2,811 DAYS LATE!
Ethopians welcomed the year 2000 at midnight on 12th september 2007. The country's christian Orthodox church uses a calender that has 13 months and is seven years behind the rest of the world , most of which uses the gregorian calender.
2.COLLISION COURSE
Completed in 2008 , ATLAS- the large particle detector at the CERN laboratory , Switzerland lies 100 mts underground . It will research the atomic particles created when the proton beams collide. Scientists hope that this help them understand the "GOD particle"- one of the remaining mysteries of the science.
3.LUNAR LANDING
Work on NASA's new lunar lander, condonamed ALTIAR, begins in 2009. The aim is to put humans on the moon by 2018 -46 years after the cast Apollo mission. This artists impression of the ALTIAR(the name of the bright star) shows how the lander will look.
4.ON THE EDGE
The rare Malagasy rainbow frog , found off Madagascar, is one of the 100 creatures on the 2008 EDGE-Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered list. Its striking colors make it popular in the pet trade a significant threat to this critically endangered species.
5.CASTRO BOWS OUT
In 2008 , almost after 50 years as the president of CUBA, FIDEL CASTRO announced his retirement , His younger brother Raul has taken power in the country.
6.PLAY TIME
The famous plastic toy Lega - Danish for PLAY WELL - turned 50 in 2008. One of the first ever plastic toys to be created , Lego is still popular all over the world , the factory in Denmark makes 2 million pieces every hour.
7.BIRTH OF BARBIE
The first Barbie doll appeared in Feb.1959 .It was made by Ruth and Elliot Handler , co-founders of American toy manufacturers Mattel.
8.TUTANKHAMUN's MASK
Tutankhamun was king of Egypt in the 14th century BC. In 1922 fabulous treasures were found in his tomb by archealogist Howard Carter. They are now in Cairo museum , Egypt . They include a gold mask which weighs 10.23kg (22.7lb).
